Dr. Elena Hinova-McNamee led a Master Class at Forbes Women Forum 2025, on The Art of Dialogue
Dialogue is the key to overcoming polarization and creating shared meaning, says Dr. Elena Hinova-McNamee, founder of Thriving Leadership™ and PhD in Leadership & Coaching. In our fractured world, the ability to engage in authentic dialogue has become essential at every level—from families and teams to organisations and society.
Dr. Hinova-McNamee views dialogue as quite distinct from discussion and debate, with three critical elements. The first is understanding precisely when to use dialogue as a tool. The second is vulnerability as a type of superpower—flowing from inner confidence and the desire to be authentically ourselves, without fear. The third element is presence, which determines whether dialogue flows smoothly like the river, or encounters friction.
True dialogue requires these three conditions, plus the practice of deeply empathetic listening—essence of fruitful dialogue where shared meaning emerges. I call this practice the “River of Dialogue”, where participants were able to experience this process and created the psychologically safe space necessary for it to unfold.
“Our polarised world needs fewer winners and more dialoguers—open, curious people seeking shared meaning.”
